i-Size Car Seats
i-Size is the name of the new European safety regulation that affects car seats for children under 15 months of age. The i-Size regulation became effective from July 2013 and provides improvements in safety in several ways. The main improvements are to provide extended rearward facing travel for children up to 15 months.
Research has shown that babies are safer in rearward-facing seats up to the age of at least 15 months. If a baby travels in a forward facing seat their relatively heavy head is unrestrained and will be thrown forwards in the event of a collision. This can cause serious neck and head injuries. Rearward-facing seats support the head over a larger area and spread the impact.
The i-Size regulation is not mandatory and does not replace the current regulation which is in place. However if you are intending to buy a new car seat system it is well worth a look.
