i-Size is the name of the new european safety regulation that affects car seats for children under 15 months of age. The i-Size regulation became effective from July 2013 and provides improvements in safety in several ways. The main improvements are to provide extended rearward facing travel for children up to 15 months.
Research has shown that babies are safer in rearward facing seats up to the age of at least 15 months. If a baby travels in a forward facing seat their relatively heavy head is unrestrained and will be thrown forwards in the event of a collision. This can cause serious neck and head injuries. Reward facing seats support the head over a larger area and spread the impact.
The i-Size regulation is not mandatory and does not replace the current regulation which is in place. However if you are intending on buying a new car seat system it is well worth a look. Maxi Cosi have worked on their new i-Size system for some time and will be launching the 2wayFix Base and 2wayPearl car seats from November 2013.
i-Size seats are also much less likely to be installed incorrectly, by using Isofix connection points in vehicles you will easily see when your car seat has been successfully connected to your vehicle ensuring your seat is safely installed.
i-Size will help to reduce the number of parents who up-size to early, as the current legislation is based on weight some parents move babies as early as 9 months. The i-Size regulation clearly states that the child must not be moved until 15 months. Only at this age is the child's neck strong enough to withstand the forces of an average forward collision.
The new Maxi Cosi system is simple, buy a 2wayFix Base which can be used with a Pebble or Cabriofix car seats, once the child out grows this seat you can add the 2wayPearl which offers extended rear facing for the child. Once your child is over 15 months you can rotate the 2wayPearl car seat to a forward facing situation.
The new 2wayFix Base will fix the current versions of both the Cabriofix and Pebble infant car seats. For extended rear facing you will need the 2wayPearl as the current Pearl car seat will NOT fit.
The 5 key points of i-Size
- Improved protection at higher forces from side and front impacts
- Rearward faced travel will be mandatory up to 15 months
- i-Size requires the vehicle to have Isofix
- i-Size car seats will fit all cars with Isofix
- By using the length of your child to classify which seat you need makes it easier to ensure you are in the right seat.
